Wixel is the musical project of Belgian composer and multi‑instrumentalist Wim Maesschalck, based in Zaventem. His work is primarily instrumental and blends electronic elements with indie‑influenced textures and analog instrumentation such as acoustic guitar and percussion. Wixel’s sound is often described as intimate, atmospheric and melancholic, drawing comparisons to artists like Hood and Domotic. Wixel’s music is characterized by a warm, organic production style in which acoustic instruments are subtly processed with gentle electronic treatments. The result is a form of “winter music” that emphasizes mood, detail and emotional nuance. His compositions frequently explore the intersection of ambient, post‑rock and experimental indie music. Maesschalck is also the founder of Slaapwel Records, a niche label dedicated exclusively to releasing music designed to help listeners fall asleep. This focus on quiet, slow‑moving soundscapes reflects an important aspect of Wixel’s artistic identity. Wixel has performed at events such as the Rhâââ Lovely Festival and the Cellula Indietronica Festival in Luxembourg, sharing stages with artists including Radian, Xiu Xiu, Rivulets, Jel, The Portables and The Go Find. He was also a co‑founder of the Rarefish collective, a platform for experimental and independent musicians. Since 2002, Wixel has released a large number of CD‑R recordings, a prolific output that at times drew criticism for prioritizing quantity over selectivity.
