Richard Hallebeek, born on 2 August 1974 in Amsterdam, began playing guitar at the age of ten and studied with several local teachers. By the time he was twelve, he was already performing in jazz and rock groups, driven by an early obsession with music. His formative influences ranged widely — from The Beatles and Weather Report to Pat Martino, Allan Holdsworth, Charlie Parker, Eddie Van Halen and Pat Metheny — along with anything he could borrow from the local library or hear on the radio. At seventeen, Hallebeek became the youngest guitarist ever admitted to the Hilversum Conservatory, an institution known for its strong jazz tradition and international student body. He studied under jazz guitarist Wim Overgaauw and completed a six‑year program in jazz, composition and improvisation, graduating with a master’s degree and the highest possible mark.
