Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a South African male choral ensemble known for performing in the traditional vocal styles of isicathamiya and mbube. The group gained worldwide recognition after collaborating with Paul Simon on his 1986 album Graceland. Over the years they have earned numerous honors, including five Grammy Awards, dedicating their fifth win to the late President Nelson Mandela. Founded in 1960 by Joseph Shabalala, the group became one of South Africa’s most influential and prolific musical acts. Their recordings achieved gold and platinum status both at home and internationally, and the ensemble evolved into a traveling ambassador of South African cultural heritage through their preservation and performance of indigenous isicathamiya music. The group’s earliest form was called Ezimnyama (“The Black Ones”), created by Joseph Shabalala in December 1960. Its members were largely Shabalala’s relatives — brothers, cousins and family members who had sung with him since childhood on the farm where he grew up.
