Spooky Tooth

Spooky Tooth was an English rock band formed in Carlisle in 1967. The group was primarily active between 1967 and 1974 and reunited several times in later decades. Known for their blend of rock, blues and early progressive elements, they became a notable presence on the late‑1960s British rock scene. Spooky Tooth emerged from the final lineup of the band Art, whose members included guitarist Luther Grosvenor, vocalist Mike Harrison, drummer Mike Kellie, and bassist Greg Ridley. After Art disbanded, these four musicians joined forces with American keyboardist and vocalist Gary Wright in October 1967. Wright had been introduced to the group by Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records. The newly formed band adopted the name Spooky Tooth and quickly entered the studio. Their debut album, It’s All About, appeared in June 1968 on Island Records. Produced by Jimmy Miller, who had worked with artists such as Traffic and the Rolling Stones, the album showcased the band’s mix of organ‑driven rock and soulful vocals. The band’s second album, Spooky Two (1969), again produced by Miller, received positive attention from the music press and later became regarded as one of their defining works. Although neither of the first two albums achieved major commercial success at the time, they helped establish Spooky Tooth’s reputation among rock audiences. Spooky Two featured tracks that would later become associated with the band’s legacy, including their interpretation of “Evil Woman” and “Better by You, Better than Me.” The latter gained renewed visibility when it was covered by Judas Priest on their 1978 album Stained Class.
