Nathalie Merchant

Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963) is an American singer‑songwriter. She joined 10,000 Maniacs in 1981, serving as the band’s lead vocalist and primary lyricist, and remained with the group for their first seven albums before departing in 1993 to pursue a solo career. Since then, she has released nine studio albums as a solo artist. Merchant was born in Jamestown, New York, the third of four children of Anthony and Anne Merchant (née Meyer). Her paternal grandfather, originally surnamed Mercante, emigrated from Sicily and played accordion, mandolin and guitar. Her parents divorced when she was seven. Raised Roman Catholic, she began drifting away from the faith during her teenage years but has stated she continues to believe in a god. Merchant grew up in a household where music was strongly encouraged. Her mother frequently played artists such as Petula Clark, the Beatles, Al Green and Aretha Franklin, and insisted that her children study music. Television was banned in the home after Merchant turned twelve. She was also exposed to classical music through regular symphony concerts. She has recalled her first rock concert—Styx in Buffalo, New York—as both overwhelming and inspiring, describing the spectacle as formative despite the chaotic environment.
