Gentle Knife was a Norwegian progressive rock ensemble known for its unusually large lineup and richly layered sound. Active during the 2010s, the group consisted of ten musicians and incorporated a wide range of instruments, including guitars, synthesizers, mellotron, woodwinds, flute, saxophone, percussion, and both male and female vocals. Their music blended the atmospheric qualities of 1970s progressive rock with a contemporary approach to arrangement and production. The band’s self‑titled debut album presented a conceptual journey that moved from the noise and pressure of urban life into a mysterious forest setting. The narrative followed a protagonist seeking renewal in nature, only to be drawn deeper into unfamiliar and unsettling territory. This thematic focus, combined with the group’s orchestral instrumentation, became a defining feature of their sound. Line‑up: Astraea Antal — flute, woodwinds, Pål Bjørseth — keyboards, vocals, trumpet, Odd Grønvold — bass, Thomas Hylland Eriksen — saxophone, woodwinds, Håkon Kavli — vocals, acoustic guitar, Eivind Lorentzen — guitar, synthesizer, Melina Oz — vocals, Ove Christian Owe — guitar, Ole Martin Svendsen — drums, percussion, Brian M. Talgo — samples, lyrics. Over the course of five years, Gentle Knife released two studio albums—Gentle Knife (2015) and Clock Unwound (2017)—and performed ten concerts in Norway and abroad. Their music also appeared on several compilation releases. Despite ongoing creative ideas and unfinished material, the group announced its dissolution in June 2019, citing the practical challenges of maintaining an active band with eleven members.
