Alabama 3 are a British musical group formed in Brixton, London, in 1995. They became widely known for their track “Woke Up This Morning,” which was used as the opening theme for The Sopranos. In the United States, the group performs under the name A3 to avoid a legal dispute with the American country band Alabama. The band began when Jake Black (born in Glasgow, 27 April 1960 – 21 May 2019) met Rob Spragg from Wales at a rave in Peckham. The two shared the idea that blending country music with acid house could create a unique musical direction. Additional members joined over time: Nick Reynolds, son of one of the Great Train Robbers, Piers Marsh, a university friend of Spragg and the band’s harmonica player and synthesizer programmer, Orlando Harrison, the keyboardist, who had previously lived with Jake Black. The group initially performed under the deliberately eccentric name The First Presleyterian Church of Elvis the Divine (UK). After being dismissed by mainstream media as a novelty act, they adopted the name Alabama 3, under which they developed their distinctive fusion of styles.
