Pop Evil

Pop Evil is an American rock band formed in 2001 in North Muskegon, Michigan, by vocalist Leigh Kakaty. The group grew out of TenFive, a late‑1990s project created by Kakaty and guitarist Jason Reed. Over the years, Pop Evil has scored several No. 1 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, including “Trenches” and “Waking Lions.” Pop Evil emerged in 2001 from members of various Michigan bands, including TenFive — a lineup featuring Kakaty, guitarists Tom Grasman and Jason Reed, bassist James Schaap, and drummer Dylan Allison. As TenFive, Kakaty and Reed released the album Severn and the EP Dam Electro independently. When TenFive dissolved, Kakaty and Allison continued forward by forming Pop Evil. The early years were marked by relentless gigging and financial struggle. Kakaty later described this period as “years of bologna sandwiches” and long nights playing cover shows to earn enough money to record proper demos. In 2004, he also faced personal tragedy when his girlfriend died under heartbreaking circumstances — a loss that deeply affected him and the band’s early direction.
