Syrius was a Hungarian jazz‑rock and progressive rock group founded in Budapest in 1962 by saxophonist Zsolt Baronits. The band initially performed beat and dance‑oriented pop‑rock, but its musical direction changed significantly at the end of the 1960s. After a period of lineup changes and a temporary breakup, Baronits re‑formed Syrius with a new generation of musicians who steered the group toward a more experimental, jazz‑infused sound. By 1970 the group had settled into what is widely regarded as its classic lineup, featuring bassist and vocalist Miklós “Jackie” Orszáczky, organist László Pataki, multi‑reedist Mihály Ráduly, guitarist László Mogyorósi and drummer András Veszelinov. This formation marked the beginning of Syrius’s most creative phase, blending jazz improvisation, rock instrumentation and elements of Hungarian musical tradition. The band attracted international attention when it secured a recording opportunity in Australia, resulting in the album Devil’s Masquerade, which became their best‑known release. Although the group intended to continue working abroad, circumstances prevented their return to Australia, and several members departed soon afterward. Guitarist Tibor Tátrai joined during this later period.
