Like many artists, My Sleeping Karma were deeply affected by the difficult years that shook the global music and cultural sector. For them, however, the impact was especially severe. Formed nearly two decades ago by a close circle of friends and maintaining the same line‑up for most of their existence, the band built an impressive legacy of five acclaimed studio albums, a 2017 live release, and extensive touring that earned them a respected place within the instrumental post‑rock and hypnotic heavy‑rock community. After a seven‑year break since their previous studio album Moksha, the group returned on 29 July 2022 with what would become their most personal and emotionally charged record. Their new album, Atma, serves as a conceptual continuation of Moksha. The title refers to the idea of the true, indestructible self — often translated as “soul.” The band entered a period marked by illness, loss and profound uncertainty, circumstances that pushed them close to ending their journey altogether. Atma captures that struggle for survival and renewal. When work began in 2017, the musicians were unsure whether the project would ever be completed, and if it did, it would exist purely as an expression of resilience rather than a pursuit of commercial success.
