Caligula’s Horse is a progressive metal band from Brisbane, Australia, founded in early 2011 by guitarist Sam Vallen and vocalist Jim Grey. The group quickly developed a reputation for combining technical musicianship with emotional intensity, drawing on influences that range from Pain of Salvation and King Crimson to Opeth, Meshuggah, Steely Dan and Jeff Buckley. The current lineup features Jim Grey on vocals, Sam Vallen on lead guitar, Dale Prinsse on bass and Josh Griffin on drums. The band’s early work included the independently released debut album Moments from Ephemeral City (2011) and the EP Colossus (2011). Their second full-length album, The Tide, the Thief & River’s End (2013), appeared after signing with Welkin Records and helped establish their presence within the international progressive metal scene. Broader recognition followed with Bloom (2015), which became their first charting release, reaching number 16 on the Australian Albums ARIA Chart and entering the Australian iTunes rankings. Over the years, Caligula’s Horse have released six studio albums, each expanding their musical palette while maintaining a strong melodic and narrative focus. Their most recent album, Charcoal Grace, was supported by an extensive world tour. The record blends powerful rock elements with a deeply emotional core, shaped by the sense of isolation and uncertainty experienced during the global pandemic. Its themes revolve around reflection, endurance and the search for renewal, ultimately moving toward a more hopeful outlook.
