Those Who Ride With Giants is the musical pseudonym of MJ Callaghan, a musician, illustrator and animator based in Sydney, Australia. The project is a one‑man venture focused on instrumental art rock and post‑rock, drawing inspiration from artists such as Caspian, This Will Destroy You, Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai. Callaghan launched the project in the early 2010s, releasing the self‑titled debut Those Who Ride With Giants EP, which introduced his narrative‑driven approach to instrumental composition. His music often aims to create a sense of journey, using layered guitars, atmospheric textures and dynamic shifts to evoke emotional and cinematic landscapes. The first full‑length album, released independently in May 2014, continued this thematic focus. Callaghan described the record as an attempt “to create a journey through the music, telling a story of the highs and lows, the struggles and victories.” His work blends melodic clarity with expansive soundscapes, characteristic of contemporary post‑rock. The project’s later release, Numinous, builds on the foundations of the debut EP, presenting an emotional narrative centered around a metaphorical seafaring voyage and the encounters experienced along the way. The album further refines Callaghan’s blend of ambient textures, expressive guitar work and visual storytelling. Those Who Ride With Giants has become known for its immersive, introspective sound, combining musical composition with Callaghan’s background in visual art to create a cohesive artistic identity.
