Thievery Corporation

Thievery Corporation is an American electronic music duo composed of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton. Their work blends elements of dub, acid jazz, reggae, Indian classical music, Middle Eastern influences, hip hop, electronica and Brazilian styles such as bossa nova. Thievery Corporation formed in the summer of 1995 at the Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington, D.C. Garza and Hilton connected through a shared interest in club culture and a wide range of musical styles, including dub, bossa nova, reggae, EDM and jazz. Their collaboration led to studio experiments that shaped their early sound, and in 1996 they founded their own label, Eighteenth Street Lounge Music. During the late 1990s, downtempo and lounge‑oriented electronic music gained broader attention, with Thievery Corporation becoming one of the genre’s most visible acts. The duo first attracted notice with their early 12‑inch releases, “Shaolin Satellite” and “2001: A Spliff Odyssey”, followed by their 1996 debut album Sounds from the Thievery Hi‑Fi.
