Karnataka

Karnataka is a Welsh progressive‑rock band formed by Ian Jones in 1997. He has remained the only constant member throughout the band’s various line‑ups. To date, Karnataka has released six studio albums and three live albums. The current line‑up consists of Sertari (vocals), Luke Machin (guitars), Ian Jones (bass), Rob Wilsher (keyboards) and Jack Summerfield (drums). The band began as a studio project in Ian Jones’ home studio, where he worked on songs written and performed with Jonathan Edwards (keyboards) and Rachel Jones (vocals). Additional musicians — Paul Davies (electric guitars) and Gavin Griffiths (drums), both of whom had played with the others before — joined the sessions. After completing the recordings, the musicians decided to continue as a full band. The name Karnataka was chosen after Ian Jones suggested it, inspired by his travels to the Indian state of the same name. The five‑piece recorded what became their self‑titled debut album in late 1997 and early 1998. Initially, the band had no intention of releasing it; the recordings were made for their own enjoyment. However, as they began performing live, word of mouth grew and audiences started requesting copies. The album was eventually released in 1998.
