Armaggedon — spelled with a double g — was a short‑lived but striking underground rock band from Munich, active in the early 1970s. The group was led by guitarist Frank Diez, known for his later work with Atlantis and Emergency, and represented the heavier, blues‑driven side of the emerging German progressive rock movement. Although their foundation was firmly in hard rock, Armaggedon is often placed within the broader world of prog and krautrock. Their long improvisations, use of electric piano and free‑flowing “jam‑band” approach reflected the spirit of Munich’s underground scene. Their sound combined heavy guitar riffs, raw production and tight instrumental interplay. Highlights include their energetic version of Spooky Tooth’s “Better By You, Better Than Me” and the extended, Jeff Beck‑influenced “Rice Pudding.” The band released their only album, simply titled Armaggedon, in 1970 on the Kuckuck label. Shortly after its release, Frank Diez left to join the jazz‑fusion group Emergency. As a result, the album has become something of a “missing link” for fans of early German guitar‑oriented progressive rock.
