Monster Magnet

Monster Magnet is an American rock band formed in 1989 in Red Bank, New Jersey, by Dave Wyndorf (vocals, guitar), John McBain (guitar) and Tim Cronin (vocals, drums). Over the years the lineup has changed many times, with Wyndorf remaining the group’s driving force. The band has released eleven studio albums and is best known for its 1990s hits “Negasonic Teenage Warhead” and “Space Lord.” Monster Magnet is widely credited as one of the key bands that helped shape and popularize the stoner rock genre, alongside Masters of Reality, Kyuss, Fu Manchu and Sleep. Before settling on the name Monster Magnet, the band considered several others — including Dog of Mystery, Airport 75, Triple Bad Acid and King Fuzz. They ultimately chose Monster Magnet, inspired by a 1960s Wham‑O toy that Wyndorf loved as a child. In 1989 the band released two demo cassettes: Forget About Life, I’m High on Dope and I’m Stoned, What Ya Gonna Do About It? Their first official release followed soon after: the single “Lizard Johnny / Freakshop USA” on Circuit Records, based on Long Island. These early recordings were made as a three‑piece, with McBain on bass, Wyndorf on guitar and vocals, and Cronin handling drums and additional vocals.
