Blackfoot is an American Southern rock band from Jacksonville, Florida, formed in 1970. Although primarily associated with Southern rock, the band is also known for its hard‑rock sound. The classic lineup consisted of guitarist/vocalist Rickey Medlocke, guitarist Charlie Hargrett, bassist Greg T. Walker, and drummer Jakson Spires. The band achieved significant success in the late 1970s and early 1980s with albums such as Strikes (1979), Tomcattin’ (1980), and Marauder (1981). In the spring of 1969, Rickey Medlocke and Greg T. Walker met New York City natives Ron Sciabarasi and Charlie Hargrett in Jacksonville and formed the band Fresh Garbage, named after the Spirit song. The lineup featured Medlocke on drums and vocals, Walker on bass, Hargrett on guitar, and Sciabarasi on keyboards. They performed frequently at The Comic Book Club on Forsyth Street. That autumn, Fresh Garbage dissolved when Sciabarasi was drafted and sent to Vietnam. Medlocke, Walker and Hargrett regrouped and formed Hammer, with Medlocke switching to guitar and lead vocals. New members included drummer Jakson Spires (April 12, 1951 – March 16, 2005), keyboardist DeWitt Gibbs, and guitarist Jerry Zambito, who left shortly afterward. Gibbs, Zambito and Spires had previously played together in Tangerine, while Spires and Walker had been bandmates in a high‑school group called The Rocking Aces. The band soon relocated to Gainesville, Florida, where they became the house band at Dub’s Steer Room, a well‑known topless bar on the outskirts of town. At the beginning of 1970, the group moved to Manhattan after a friend, Nancy O’Connor, who worked at a music publishing company, recommended them to her employer, who arranged for the band to relocate to New York City.
