AVKRVUST is a Norwegian progressive‑rock band founded by lifelong friends Martin Utby and Simon Bergseth. The two musicians grew up together, performing in numerous groups over the years, yet never sharing a band of their own despite a childhood promise—made at the age of seven—that they would one day form a project together. More than two decades later, that early pact materialized with the creation of AVKRVUST. The band’s origins lie in a remote cabin in the forests of Alvdal, Norway, where Utby and Bergseth began composing the material that would form their debut release. Their first album, running approximately 55 minutes, draws on a wide range of influences from the progressive and alternative scenes, including Mew, Anekdoten, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Neal Morse, and King Crimson. The music reflects both the duo’s shared musical upbringing and the atmospheric isolation of the Norwegian landscape in which it was written. Initially centered around Bergseth (guitars, bass, vocals, composition) and Utby (drums, synthesizers, composition), the project later expanded into a full band with the addition of Øystein Aadland (bass, keyboards), Edward Seim (guitars), and Auver Gaaren (keyboards). This lineup brought further depth and texture to the group’s sound. The name AVKRVUST is derived from the work of Norwegian author Kjell Aukrust, though altered to avoid confusion with the writer’s surname. The band’s music is characterized by its blend of modern progressive‑rock sensibilities, melodic complexity, and atmospheric arrangements, positioning AVKRVUST as a notable new voice within the Scandinavian prog tradition.
