Flying Circus

This Flying Circus is a German progressive rock band known for blending 1970s‑style prog with elements of hard rock. Their sound draws on the melodic and structural influences of Genesis, Pink Floyd, and especially Gentle Giant, while also incorporating the heavier edge associated with Uriah Heep and Led Zeppelin. Active since 1990, the group has maintained a firm underground reputation and built an extensive discography over the decades. Their album The Eternal Moment represents the latest chapter in their work and stands out as an ambitious and richly arranged release. The band recorded the album live in the legendary Dierks Studio near Cologne, with all five members performing together. This approach allowed for greater spontaneity and interaction between the musicians, even if it meant sacrificing a degree of studio precision. Given the band’s high level of musicianship, the result remains controlled and confident, and the music never feels rushed or unfocused. Vocalist Michael Dorp brings a distinctive character to the material, though his expressive delivery can occasionally feel uneven. His voice evokes a mixture of David Surkamp (Pavlov’s Dog), Tony Moff Mollo (Grobschnitt), Martin Griffiths (Beggars Opera), and Derek Shulman (Gentle Giant), placing him firmly within the tradition of theatrical 1970s prog singers.
