Vuur

Anneke van Giersbergen is a Dutch vocalist known for her work across metal, progressive rock, folk and acoustic music. She first gained international recognition as the singer of The Gathering, before launching a solo career in 2007. Her body of work includes collaborations with Canadian musician Devin Townsend, the progressive project The Gentle Storm, and a studio album recorded with the Icelandic folk group Árstíðir. The diversity of her musical output led Van Giersbergen to establish a clearer artistic distinction between her projects. In 2016 she created the progressive metal band VUUR, intended as the dedicated outlet for her heavier material. The name, meaning “fire” in Dutch and associated with passion and drive, was chosen to signal the band’s musical direction. Performances under her own name continued to focus on acoustic and folk‑oriented work. Van Giersbergen has described this division as a way to explore contrasting musical extremes. VUUR’s sound incorporates elements familiar from her earlier projects — such as the atmospheric qualities of The Gathering and certain stylistic traces of The Gentle Storm — while presenting a darker, more progressive and less folk‑influenced approach. The band maintains a melodic foundation but is firmly rooted in heavy music.
