The Pineapple Thief

The Pineapple Thief are an English progressive rock band founded in 1999 by Bruce Soord in Yeovil, Somerset. As of June 2024, the lineup consists of Soord (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Jon Sykes (bass), Steve Kitch (keyboards) and Gavin Harrison (drums). The band has released 16 studio albums, 6 EPs, and several live and compilation albums. Bruce Soord began the musical project Pineapple Thief (named after a line of dialogue in the film Eve’s Bayou) in 1999 as an outlet for his songwriting. The debut album, Abducting the Unicorn, was released by Cyclops Records in 1999, followed by 137 in 2002. In 2003, Soord released Variations on a Dream and subsequently decided to form a full band, adding “The” to the name to distinguish the initials TPT from those of Porcupine Tree. The first lineup featured Soord (vocals), Jon Sykes (bass), Wayne Higgins (guitar), Matt O’Leary (keyboards) and Keith Harrison (drums). As a full band, they released 12 Stories Down in 2004, which was re‑recorded and remixed as 10 Stories Down in 2005. O’Leary left the group afterward, and Steve Kitch, who co‑produced and mixed 10 Stories Down, joined as keyboardist. Following the release of Little Man in 2006, the band issued What We Have Sown in late 2007 as their final release on Cyclops before signing with Kscope, a division of Snapper Music. In 2007, The Pineapple Thief’s music appeared in season three of the MTV reality series The Hills; the song “Snowdrops” was featured in episode 28. Wayne Higgins left the band in March 2008.
