Jeronimo

Jeronimo was formed in 1969 by Rainer Marz (lead guitar, vocals), Gunnar Schäfer (bass, vocals) and Ringo Funk (drums, lead vocals). Their first two singles, Heya and Na Na Hey Hey—both cover versions—were released in 1969 and 1970 and became hits in several European countries. In 1970, the band toured Germany with Steppenwolf, gaining wider recognition. That same year they appeared at the Progressive Pop Festival in Cologne, one of the key events of the early German rock scene. Jeronimo also shared festival stages with major acts such as Deep Purple and Golden Earring, performing at various open‑air events across Europe. On 9 and 11 June 1970, the band represented Germany at the Barbarela de Conjuntos 70 competition held at the Barbarela Discotheque in Mallorca. Their performance, however, exceeded the allotted time, resulting in disqualification. Despite their relatively short career, Jeronimo left a notable mark on the early 1970s German hard‑rock landscape through their energetic live shows and strong early singles.
