Gila formed in early 1969 and quickly developed a following in Germany thanks to their experimental, psychedelic sound. The original lineup consisted of: Daniel Alluno — drums, bongos, tabla, percussion, Fritz Scheyhing — organ, Mellotron, keyboards, percussion, Conny Veit — guitars, vocals, tabla, additional keyboards, Walter Wiederkehr — bass. In 1971, the group recorded their debut album Gila – Free Electric Sound, a release that became a cult classic within the krautrock and spacerock underground. Not long after, the band dissolved in 1972. In 1973, guitarist Conny Veit revived Gila with a completely new lineup. This incarnation recorded the band’s second studio album, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, a work that blended krautrock with psychedelic folk influences and thematic references to Native American history. After this release, Gila disbanded again in 1974. A final archival release appeared in 1999: Night Works, a live recording from 1972 originally intended for radio broadcast. The album offered a rare glimpse into the improvisational energy of the band’s early period.
