Peter Bardens

Peter Bardens (19 June 1945 – 22 January 2002) was an English keyboardist and a founding member of the progressive rock group Camel. He played keyboards, sang and co‑wrote songs with Andrew Latimer. Over the course of his career, Bardens worked with artists such as Rod Stewart, Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and Van Morrison, and recorded eleven solo albums. Bardens was born in Westminster, London, to Marie Marks and Dennis Bardens, the latter a novelist and biographer. He grew up in Notting Hill. After studying fine art at the Byam Shaw School of Art, he learned piano and later switched to the Hammond organ after being inspired by jazz organist Jimmy Smith. In 1965, Bardens spent a brief period with Them after leaving The Cheynes. He then formed The Peter B’s, releasing the 1966 single “If You Wanna Be Happy” (b/w “Jodrell Blues”), an instrumental interpretation of the well‑known song. This group evolved into Peter B’s Looners, which later became Shotgun Express, a soul‑oriented band featuring Rod Stewart, Peter Green and Mick Fleetwood. Fleetwood later credited Bardens with helping launch his musical career. From August 1968 to February 1970, Bardens led The Village, a band that included future Attractions bassist Bruce Thomas and drummer Bill Porter. They released the single “Man in the Moon” / “Long Time Coming.” In 1970, Bardens recorded The Answer, an album featuring contributions from Peter Green and Andy Gee. He followed this with a self‑titled album in 1971, released in the United States as Write My Name in the Dust. In 1972, he co‑founded Camel, remaining with the band until 1978, when he left to join Van Morrison’s group. He performed on Morrison’s album Wavelength and took part in the accompanying tour. By the late 1970s, Bardens began exploring electronic music, releasing the album Heart to Heart in 1979.
