Baker Gurvitz Army

Baker Gurvitz Army were an English rock group. Their self‑titled debut album featured a blend of hard rock combined with Ginger Baker’s jazz‑ and Afrobeat‑influenced drumming. The lengthy “Mad Jack” was the album’s standout track. The record entered the US Billboard 200 and peaked at number 22 on the UK Albums Chart. The two following albums contained similar material, although neither charted in the UK or the US. When Cream split up in 1968, Ginger Baker was invited to join Blind Faith, which formed the following year. The project was short‑lived, and after its demise Baker formed his own group, Ginger Baker’s Air Force, in 1970. Former The Gun and Three Man Army members — brothers Paul and Adrian Gurvitz — were looking for a new direction after their earlier successes. They joined forces with Baker in 1974, adopting the name Baker Gurvitz Army to reflect the new union, while also “switching branches of the military” in the band name. In 1975, the band recorded two studio albums, followed by one more in 1976. No live albums were released during the band’s original run. The group disbanded in 1976 following the death of their manager. In 2003, a compilation album titled Flying in and Out of Stardom was released, including four previously unreleased live tracks.
