Lucifer’s Friend was a German rock band formed in Hamburg in 1970 by Peter Hesslein (guitar), John Lawton (vocals), Dieter Horns (bass), Peter Hecht (keyboards) and Joachim Reitenbach (drums). The group became known as an early contributor to both heavy metal and progressive rock, later incorporating elements of jazz and fusion, most notably on their 1974 album Banquet. Their 1971 debut, Lucifer’s Friend, has been cited as an influential precursor to doom metal, thanks to its dark themes and heavy, ominous sound. In 1981, the band revisited their heavier roots with Mean Machine, which leaned toward the emerging speed‑metal style. In 1969, vocalist John Lawton found himself in West Germany after his band Stonewall dissolved during a tour. While the other members returned to the United Kingdom, Lawton remained in Germany, where he met Hesslein, Horns, Hecht and Reitenbach, who were then performing as The German Bonds. The five musicians recorded an album under the name Asterix in 1970 before adopting the new name Lucifer’s Friend.
