Myrath (Arabic: ميراث, “Legacy”) is a Tunisian progressive metal band formed in 2001 by guitarist Malek Ben Arbia and now based in France. The group is known for blending Arabic and Middle Eastern musical elements with power metal and progressive rock, making them one of the defining forces in oriental metal. They describe their sound as “blazing desert metal.” Myrath was also the first Tunisian band to sign with an international record label. Malek Ben Arbia founded the band in 2001 at the age of thirteen, originally under the name X‑Tazy, together with several childhood friends. In their early years they performed covers ranging from blues to heavy and death metal. After numerous lineup changes, keyboardist and vocalist Elyes Bouchoucha joined in 2003 and remained a key member until 2020. Over time, the band shifted toward a progressive and oriental metal direction. In 2005 they released the EP Double Face on USB flash drives in Tunisia — an unusual format that helped them gain attention in Europe. This exposure led to a contract with the French label Bremmis Music, making them the first Tunisian act to sign with a European company. Around this period they met French musician Kevin Codfert, who became their long‑time producer and an important creative partner.
