Pendragon are an English neo‑progressive rock band formed in 1978 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, originally under the name Zeus Pendragon by guitarist and vocalist Nick Barrett. The word “Zeus” was dropped before the band began recording, as the members felt the full name was too long to look good on a T‑shirt. After several early lineup changes, the band’s personnel stabilized from 1986 onward, with only the drummer position changing multiple times. Pendragon remain active as of 2025. Pendragon were part of the early‑1980s progressive rock revival alongside Marillion, Pallas, Solstice and Twelfth Night. Like their contemporaries IQ, they frequently supported Marillion and other major neo‑prog acts on tour and at the Marquee Club, which hosted regular progressive rock events. In spring 1984, the band participated in the televised Best Bands West competition at the Goldiggers club in Chippenham, performing a piece titled “O Devineo” (spelled as credited on TV). A Bristol‑based covers duo ultimately won the contest. After releasing their debut album The Jewel, Pendragon pursued a more commercial direction on Kowtow and the EPs Red Shoes and Saved By You, though these efforts did not lead to mainstream success. The band also appeared at the 1983 Reading Festival and were signed to Elusive Records. In 1991, Pendragon founded their own label, Toff Records, and issued the archival compilation The Rest of Pendragon, collecting earlier EP material. They also released the studio album The World, marking a return to a more progressive style. This direction continued on their next three albums: The Window of Life, The Masquerade Overture, and Not of This World.
