Pat Metheny

Metheny was born in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, into a musical family. His father, Dave, played trumpet; his mother, Lois, was a singer; and his maternal grandfather, Delmar, was a professional trumpeter. Metheny’s first instrument was also the trumpet, taught to him by his older brother Mike. Music was a constant presence at home, with family members often playing together in small trios. Although his parents admired swing and big‑band music and took him to hear artists like Clark Terry and Doc Severinsen, they initially had little enthusiasm for the guitar. Metheny’s interest in the instrument grew rapidly after seeing The Beatles on television in 1964. For his twelfth birthday he was finally allowed to buy his first guitar — a Gibson ES‑140 3/4 — which marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to the instrument. Metheny first gained international recognition as the leader of the Pat Metheny Group (1977–2010), a band known for its innovative blend of jazz, world music, and contemporary harmony. Alongside the Group, he has maintained an extensive career in small‑combo, duet, and solo formats, as well as numerous collaborations and side projects.
