Normaal

Normaal is a Dutch rock band widely regarded as the originators of boerenrock (“farmers’ rock”). The group was founded in 1974 by Bennie Jolink (known as Buizen Beernd) and Jan Manschot (Brekken Jan). They come from the Achterhoek region and perform in the local Achterhooks dialect. The band is known for its exceptionally loyal fanbase. Their tours, referred to as veldtochten (“field campaigns”), often take place in large festival tents as part of what became known as the “Super Tent Tour.” Recurring themes in their lyrics include drinking, women and having a good time — summed up in the band’s own term høken. Motorcycling is another important part of their identity, and several members have survived serious accidents. Their first major hit, “Oerend Hard,” tells the story of two motorcyclists and a tragic crash, inspired by events near the wooded area called ’t Zand close to the town of Hengelo in the Achterhoek. In late 1974, Jan Manschot gave a ride to the then‑little‑known Bennie Jolink from the student city of Enschede back to the Achterhoek. During the drive, the two complained about the rise of disco and the popularity of glitter rock, genres they felt had little to do with the raw energy they loved. Manschot had played drums for a short period, and Jolink had been turning his frustrations about life in Amsterdam into rough, poetic lyrics. The two decided it was time to start a band — one that reflected their own culture, language and attitude.
