Kin Ping Meh

Kin Ping Meh is a German rock band originally active from 1970 to 1977 and reformed in 2005. Their name is taken from Franz Kuhn’s German translation of the Chinese classic Jin Ping Mei. The group was founded in 1969 in Mannheim by Joachim Schäfer, Werner Stephan, Frieder Schmitt, Torsten Herzog, Kalle Weber and Willie Wagner. Parts of the lineup had previously played in the school band Thunderbirds and the regional pop group Take Five. In 1970, the band was discovered by Polydor Records during a Bild am Sonntag competition on the Reeperbahn. They soon recorded their first single, Everything’s My Way / Woman, followed by Alexandra / Everyday. Their self‑titled debut album appeared in 1971 and was reissued in 2004. A second album followed in 1972, and a third in 1973. The fourth album, Virtues and Sins (1974), was also released in Argentina under the title Virtudes y Pecados. The cover artwork was created by graphic designer and photographer Günter Blum, who later designed the sleeve for the 1976 double LP Concrete. The band’s final album of the 1970s, simply titled Kin Ping Meh, was released in 1977. AllMusic later described the record as “adequate and marginally derivative of the heavier‑hitting acts of the early ’70s,” reflecting the mixed critical reception of their later work.
