Faust

Faust is a German experimental rock group formed in Hamburg in 1970. Known for their radical approach to sound, the band became one of the central figures of the 1970s krautrock movement. Their music incorporated dissonance, improvisation, tape manipulation and early electronic experimentation, elements that later influenced ambient, industrial and avant‑rock artists. The group was assembled under the direction of producer and former music journalist Uwe Nettelbeck (1940–2007). The original lineup brought together musicians from two little‑known Hamburg projects: Nukleus (Jean‑Hervé Péron, Rudolf Sosna, Gunther Wüsthoff) and Campylognatus Citelli (Werner “Zappi” Diermaier, Hans‑Joachim Irmler, Arnulf Meifert). Working closely with engineer Kurt Graupner, Faust developed a sound that challenged conventional rock structures and embraced studio experimentation as a creative tool. Faust’s influence has extended far beyond the krautrock era. Artists and groups such as Radiohead, Swell Maps, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Stereolab, Simple Minds, Sonic Youth, Mark E. Smith, Nurse With Wound and Madlib have cited the band as an inspiration. Faust emerged at a time when German rock was searching for its own identity. The musicians who would form the band were active in two experimental ensembles that rarely performed live. Under Nettelbeck’s guidance, these groups were brought together and supported by a deal with Polydor.
