Satin Whale was a German progressive rock band formed in January 1971 in the Cologne–Bonn region. The three founding members, Brück, Schättgen, and Dellmann, had already been active as musicians for several years. After expanding to a quartet in the summer of 1972 with guitarist Roesberg, the band recorded its first album in 1973, which was released the following year by the Brain label. They achieved first place in the SWF 3 competition “Rocksound 74.” Between 1974 and 1981, a total of seven albums were released, including a double live album and the soundtrack for Die Faust in der Tasche. In November 1974, Wolfgang Hieronymi replaced Schättgen as drummer. The lineup remained unchanged until 1980; on the final LP from 1981, only Brück from the original formation was still present, while Dieter Roesberg contributed as a guest musician on two tracks. During the final tour in 1981, Roesberg rejoined the band as guitarist and replaced Ebo Wagner. Musically, the band shifted from early long-form tracks featuring elegiac keyboard and flute passages and elaborate arrangements toward more conventional song formats. In addition to numerous performances in Germany (including shows with The Sweet), the band also played in the Netherlands and, through the support of the Goethe-Institut, in Poland.
