The Heavy Horses is the name Canadian musician Justin Mahoney uses for his project built around stories of outlaws, angels and dark, old‑world romance. His debut album Murder Ballads & Other Love Songs earned nominations for Country Recording of the Year at the 2013 East Coast Music Awards and for Folk Artist of the Year at the 2013 MusicNL Awards. Mahoney grew up immersed in traditional country music, and that influence naturally shaped his songwriting. Although he has never lived the violent or lawless tales he writes about — the shootouts, the heartbreak, the desperate escapes — those themes run strongly through his work, echoing the spirit of classic outlaw country and the mythic American West.
