The Band

The Band (often styled as the Band) were a Canadian–American rock group formed in Toronto, Ontario. The lineup consisted of Rick Danko (bass, guitar, vocals, fiddle), Garth Hudson (organ, keyboards, accordion, saxophone), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals), and Robbie Robertson (guitar, piano, percussion), all of whom were Canadian, along with Levon Helm (drums, vocals, mandolin, guitar, bass), the sole American member. Their music blended Americana, folk, rock, R&B, jazz, and country, and their influence extended to artists such as George Harrison, Elton John, the Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, and Wilco. Between 1958 and 1963, the musicians performed as the Hawks, serving as the backing band for rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins in Toronto. In the mid‑1960s, they gained wider recognition when they supported Bob Dylan on his 1966 concert tour, becoming Dylan’s first fully electric touring band.
