Lettuce is a North American funk band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1992. The lineup features Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff (guitar), Nigel Hall (keyboards, Hammond B‑3, piano, vocals), Adam Deitch (drums and percussion), Erick “Maverick” Coomes (bass), Ryan Zoidis (saxophone), and Eric “Benny” Bloom (trumpet). The group began in the summer of 1992, when its members met as teenagers during a music program at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. United by their shared love of funk pioneers such as Herbie Hancock, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Tower of Power, they spent that summer jamming together before parting ways. In the fall of 1994, they reunited as Berklee undergraduates and started approaching Boston jazz clubs, asking owners and musicians to “let us play” — a phrase that eventually inspired the name Lettuce. Early keyboard duties were handled first by Michael Butler, then by Jeff Bhasker, and later by Neal Evans when Bhasker moved on.
