Brian Culbertson (born January 12, 1973) is an American musician, composer and producer whose work spans smooth jazz, R&B and funk. He is a multi‑instrumentalist known for performing on piano, synthesizers and trombone, and has become a prominent figure in contemporary jazz since the 1990s. Culbertson was born in Decatur, Illinois, into a musical household. He began studying piano at the age of eight, added drums at nine, trombone at ten, and later picked up bass and euphonium during his school years. His early listening habits included artists such as Sting, The Yellowjackets, George Duke, David Foster, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Chicago, and Earth, Wind & Fire, all of whom shaped his developing style. He attended MacArthur High School, where his father worked as a music educator, and later moved to Chicago to study at DePaul University. While in college, Culbertson began assembling musicians, recording demos and refining his sound. A demo tape he sent to industry contact Bud Harner in Los Angeles led to his first recording contract, launching a career that would establish him as one of smooth jazz’s most recognizable contemporary voices.
