Tinariwen (Tamasheq: ⵜⵏⵔⵓⵏ, with vowels ⵜⵉⵏⴰⵔⵉⵡⵉⵏ, the plural of ténéré, meaning “desert”) is a collective of Tuareg musicians originating from the Sahara, particularly from southern Algeria and northern Mali in the region known as Azawad. They are widely regarded as pioneers of desert blues, a guitar‑driven style that blends traditional Tuareg and broader African musical elements with influences from Western rock. The collective first came together in the late 1970s, and their earliest studio recordings appeared in the early 1990s. Tinariwen began touring internationally in the early 2000s, which helped bring their sound to a global audience. The group was founded by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, with long‑standing members Alhassane Ag Touhami and Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni also active since 1979. Tinariwen gained wider recognition outside the Sahara in 2001 with the release of The Radio Tisdas Sessions. Their most recent album, Hoggar, was released in 2026.
