Magnum are an English melodic hard rock band formed in Birmingham in 1972 by Tony Clarkin (guitar, songwriter, producer) and Bob Catley (vocals), originally to serve as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Over the years, Magnum have undergone numerous personnel changes; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remained intact until Clarkin’s death in 2024. Magnum’s first major success came with Chase the Dragon in 1982, which reached number 17 on the UK Albums Chart. The album included several tracks that became staples of their live shows, such as “Soldier of the Line”, “Sacred Hour” and “The Spirit”. On a Storyteller’s Night marked their breakthrough in Europe and achieved Gold certification in the United Kingdom. Their 1986 album Vigilante saw the band move further toward a mainstream sound. Magnum reached their commercial peak in 1988 with Wings of Heaven, which entered the UK Top Ten for the first time, reaching number five. The album produced three Top 40 singles: “Days of No Trust”, “Start Talking Love” and “It Must Have Been Love”. This success was followed by Goodnight L.A. in 1990, produced by Keith Olsen, which reached number nine on the UK Albums Chart and generated another Top 40 single, “Rockin’ Chair”.
