Nils Lofgren

Nils Hilmer Lofgren (born June 21, 1951) is an American rock musician, recording artist, songwriter and multi‑instrumentalist. In addition to his solo career, he has been a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band since 1984, a member of Crazy Horse, and the founder and frontman of the band Grin. In 2014, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band. Lofgren was born in Chicago, Illinois, to an Italian mother from Nicosia, Sicily, and a Swedish father. The family moved to Bethesda, Maryland, when he was a young child. His first instrument was classical accordion, which he began studying at age five and pursued seriously for a decade. After years of classical and jazz training, he shifted his focus to rock music and concentrated on piano and guitar. Although naturally left‑handed, he plays guitar right‑handed. Lofgren attended Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda but left in 1968 at age seventeen to pursue music full‑time. He had been a competitive gymnast during his school years, a skill he later incorporated into his stage performances and referenced in the title of his 1985 album Flip.
