Bon Iver is an American indie‑folk band formed in 2006 by singer‑songwriter Justin Vernon in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Initially conceived as Vernon’s solo project, Bon Iver gradually developed into a collaborative ensemble. The group’s core members include Vernon, Sean Carey, Michael Lewis, Matthew McCaughan, Andrew Fitzpatrick, and Jenn Wasner, each contributing vocals and a wide range of instrumental roles. The project first gained attention with the release of For Emma, Forever Ago in 2007, an album largely recorded during Vernon’s self‑imposed isolation in a remote Wisconsin cabin. The record’s intimate sound and emotional clarity established Bon Iver as a distinctive voice in contemporary folk music. Bon Iver’s self‑titled second album, released in 2011, expanded the project’s sonic palette and earned the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2012. Subsequent releases continued to explore experimental and atmospheric directions: 22, A Million (2016) introduced abstract structures and electronic textures, while I, I (2019) offered a warmer, more expansive approach and received a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Their fifth album, Sable, Fable, appeared in 2025. The name “Bon Iver” derives from the French phrase bon hiver (“good winter”), a greeting featured in the television series Northern Exposure. Vernon adopted the phrase during a period of personal upheaval following the dissolution of his previous band, DeYarmond Edison, and a prolonged illness. While recovering at his father’s cabin in Dunn County, Wisconsin, he encountered the phrase and adapted it into the project’s name.
