ISON is a Swedish musical project formed in Gothenburg in 2015. The group was originally a duo consisting of vocalist Heike Langhans and multi‑instrumentalist Daniel Änghede, known for his work with Crippled Black Phoenix, Hearts of Black Science and as a live session member for Draconian. The project developed a style described as cosmic drone, combining elements of post‑rock, shoegaze and drone music with an emphasis on atmospheric and space‑themed soundscapes. ISON released several recordings as a duo before Langhans departed the project in late 2019. Following her departure, Änghede continued ISON as a solo project. The album Aurora, released on 26 June 2020, was the first ISON release created solely under his direction and followed the earlier album Inner‑Space. Änghede has described the creative process behind Aurora as a period of intensive writing and recording throughout 2020. Rather than seeking a permanent vocalist, he invited a number of guest singers to contribute, resulting in an album with a diverse vocal palette and a broader emotional range. The release was conceived as a continuous listening experience, intended to be heard in sequence. ISON’s fourth album was issued in a limited edition of 300 copies on white vinyl and 450 copies on CD. Guest vocalists on the album include Sylvaine, Cammie Gilbert (Oceans of Slumber), Tara Van Flower (Lycia), Vila, Carline Van Roos (Lethian Dreams), Gogo Melone (Aeonian Sorrow), Circle & Wind and Lisa Cuthbert. Additional contributions include bass by Niklas Sandin (Katatonia) and synthesizer work by Mark Furnevall (Venus Principle, ex‑Crippled Black Phoenix).
