Kauan

Kauan is a musical project founded in 2005 by Anton Belov and Alexander Borovykh in Chelyabinsk, a city located deep in Russia’s interior, nearly 2,000 kilometers east of Moscow. Growing up in an area with little local music activity, Belov began composing at a young age, drawing inspiration from the surrounding Ural Mountains and the vast plains of the region. As a teenager immersed in European metal, Belov became particularly drawn to the sound of Finnish‑language vocals. The language’s vowel‑rich structure appealed to him both for melodic singing and harsher vocal styles. He adopted Finnish for his early work not only for its sonic qualities, but also because its relative obscurity allowed listeners to focus on the emotional tone of the music rather than the literal meaning of the lyrics. By age sixteen, Belov had written the material for Kauan’s debut album Lumikuuro, an atmospheric blend of doom metal and black metal. The album, recorded with Borovykh, was later released through BadMoonMan Records. Belov chose the name Kauan—Finnish for “for a long time”—to evoke themes of duration, memory and anticipation. Lumikuuro introduced many of the elements that would become hallmarks of Kauan’s sound: melancholic clean vocals, harsh growls, distinctive synthesizer textures and folk‑influenced arrangements inspired by nature. It also showcased Belov’s ability to shift fluidly between heavy, intense passages and quiet, introspective moments.
