The Windmill

The Windmill is a Norwegian progressive rock band that originated in the autumn of 2001. The group began as an informal side project, created for enjoyment alongside the various bands its members were active in at the time. The name and concept trace back to a moment experienced by keyboardist Jean Robert Viita in Germany in the early 1990s: while listening to Camel’s Moonmadness in his car, he saw a windmill farm on a hilltop and noticed the rotation of the blades appearing to move in sync with the music. This impression later became the symbolic foundation for the band. During the first years, The Windmill operated without long‑term ambitions. Rehearsals were irregular, and the musicians alternated between playing their own material and performing classic progressive rock pieces. At that stage, the idea of forming a permanent band with live performances or studio releases was still distant. As time passed, the project gradually evolved. By the autumn of 2005, the members decided to begin work on what would become their debut album, To Be Continued…. Recording sessions and rehearsals took place in the studio of then‑guitarist Bent Jensen in Fredrikstad, where the group had access to a complete digital recording setup. This period marked the transformation of The Windmill from a casual side project into a fully functioning band. Regular rehearsals were introduced, running parallel to the studio work, and the group began shaping its identity as a dedicated progressive rock ensemble.
