Greenslade were an English progressive rock band formed in the autumn of 1972 by keyboard player Dave Greenslade and bassist Tony Reeves, together with keyboardist Dave Lawson and drummer Andrew McCulloch. The band made their live debut at Frankfurt’s Zoom Club in November 1972. Greenslade and Reeves, longtime musical associates with a shared background in jazz, had previously been founding members of Colosseum. Wanting to create a group built around two keyboardists, they invited Dave Lawson—formerly of Samurai, The Alan Bown Set and Web—to join. Drummer Andrew McCulloch had earlier played with King Crimson and Fields. On 20 February 1973, Greenslade appeared on BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test, performing “Pilgrims Progress” and “Bedside Manners Are Extra,” both from the album Bedside Manners Are Extra. The band’s third album, Spyglass Guest, became their most commercially successful release, reaching number 34 on the UK Albums Chart. Shortly after the album was completed, Tony Reeves left to focus on his work as a producer. He was replaced for the U.S. tour and the fourth album Time and Tide by Martin Briley, who also contributed guitar and backing vocals. Briley joined the group on Lawson’s recommendation, as the two had previously met during session work.
