Lianne Charlotte Barnes (born 23 August 1989), known professionally as Lianne La Havas, is a British singer‑songwriter. Her career began after meeting various musicians, including Paloma Faith, for whom she sang backing vocals. In 2010, she signed with Warner Bros. Records and spent two years developing her songwriting before releasing any material. Her debut studio album, Is Your Love Big Enough? (2012), received positive critical reviews and earned her a nomination for the BBC Sound of 2012 poll, as well as iTunes’ Album of the Year award. She has since released two more studio albums: Blood (2015) and Lianne La Havas (2020). She received a Grammy nomination in 2016 and Brit Award nominations in 2017 and 2021. She currently lives in London. La Havas was born and raised in London to a Greek father and Jamaican mother. She grew up in Tooting and Streatham, spending much of her childhood with her grandparents after her parents separated. She began singing at age seven and cites her parents’ diverse musical tastes as major influences. Her father, a skilled multi‑instrumentalist, taught her the basics of guitar and piano. She wrote her first song at 11 but did not learn to play guitar until she was 18. She also sang in her school choir. La Havas attended Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls in Thornton Heath, where she completed her A‑levels. She initially planned to take an art foundation course but ultimately left college to pursue music full‑time.
