Cold Blood

Cold Blood is a long‑running R&B and horn‑driven funk band founded by Larry Field in 1968, originally rooted in the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Region. Because of the strong presence and popularity of lead vocalist Lydia Pense, the group has also performed and recorded under the name Lydia Pense & Cold Blood. Cold Blood first gained attention in 1969, when promoter Bill Graham signed them after an audition and booked them at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Pense’s powerful vocal style has often drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin, and it was Joplin herself who encouraged Graham to hear the band. The term “East Bay Grease” is often used to describe the brass‑heavy funk‑rock sound that emerged in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Cold Blood were among the early pioneers of this style, alongside groups such as Tower of Power, who even titled one of their albums East Bay Grease. Members of Tower of Power’s horn section have frequently performed with Cold Blood since the early 1970s, and musicians such as Skip Mesquite and Mic Gillette have played in both bands.
