Sir Lord Baltimore

Sir Lord Baltimore was an American rock and early heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1968. The classic lineup consisted of John Garner (lead vocals, drums), Louis Dambra (guitar) and Gary Justin (bass). A 1971 Creem magazine review of their debut album Kingdom Come is often cited as the first documented use of the term “heavy metal” to describe a musical style. AllMusic has described the group as “arguably America’s first bona fide heavy metal band.” The band was also notable for featuring a drumming lead vocalist, a rarity in rock and metal. In 2006, Garner and Dambra reunited under the Sir Lord Baltimore name and released Sir Lord Baltimore III Raw, an album with an explicit Christian lyrical focus — a departure from their earlier themes. Justin, no longer active as a musician, did not participate. Garner died on December 5, 2015, from liver failure, effectively ending the band. Garner, Dambra and Justin first met in high school and began rehearsing together in 1968. At the time, Dambra — performing under the name Louis Caine — was also a member of The Koala, who released a self‑titled album in 1969. Justin has cited Jack Bruce of Cream as an early influence on his decision to play bass.
