Circus 2000 was an Italian psychedelic and progressive rock band from Turin, active in the early 1970s. They became known for a sound that closely resembled American West Coast psychedelia—so convincingly, in fact, that early reference works occasionally listed them alongside U.S. bands. The group formed in 1970 when vocalist Silvana Aliotta joined the musicians of Best Genius, shortly before their record label encouraged them to adopt the new name Circus 2000. Their self‑titled debut album appeared later that same year, accompanied by a single featuring Italian‑language versions of two album tracks. The LP offered ten short songs shaped by Californian psychedelic influences, with Aliotta’s distinctive voice as its most recognizable element. Although the album did not reflect the emerging Italian progressive rock identity of the period, it has since earned appreciation among collectors. The track “I Am the Witch”—also issued in Italian as “Io, la strega”—is often highlighted as one of the album’s strongest moments.Like many bands of the era, Circus 2000 balanced their English‑language album material with more commercial Italian‑language singles. In 1971 they released “Regalami un sabato sera”, backed with “Ho regalato i capelli”, an Italian adaptation of a song from their debut. The single gained additional visibility through its use in a popular television series. The band’s second album, An Escape from a Box, arrived in 1972. Sung in English and featuring a more polished production, it incorporated stronger progressive elements while maintaining the concise format of their earlier work.
