God is An Astronaut

God Is an Astronaut are an Irish post‑rock duo from County Wicklow, formed in 2002 by twins Niels and Torsten Kinsella. Their style incorporates elements of electronic music, krautrock and space rock, drawing comparisons to Tangerine Dream. To date, they have released twelve studio albums. The band was formed in 2002 by twin brothers Niels and Torsten Kinsella, who took their name from a quote in the film Nightbreed. Their debut album, The End of the Beginning, was released the same year on Revive Records, the band’s own independent label. The album was originally intended as a farewell to the music industry. Two self‑produced music videos — for “The End of the Beginning” and “From Dust to the Beyond” — received airplay on MTV UK and other MTV Europe channels. God Is an Astronaut describe each of their albums as a sonic “photograph or snapshot of who we are in that moment.” In mid‑2006, a licensing deal with UK label Rocket Girl led to the re‑release of their EP A Moment of Stillness and their second album All Is Violent, All Is Bright. Their third album, Far from Refuge, was released in April 2007 on Revive Records and as a digital download. Their fourth album, the self‑titled God Is an Astronaut, followed on 7 November 2008. On 12 February 2010, the band released the single “In the Distance Fading” via their website, serving as the second track from their fifth album, Age of the Fifth Sun, released on 17 May 2010. In early 2008, the band embarked on their first U.S. tour. One day before returning home, $20,000 worth of uninsured equipment was stolen from their van in New Jersey.
